Pomeranian Grooming

Pomeranians have a proper double coat — short dense undercoat plus long straight guard hairs — and the biggest mistake a groomer can make is shaving that short. At Kay's Groom Room a Pomeranian groom runs 75–120 minutes and prices from $55 to $85. Most of that time is spent on a high-velocity dryer blow-out to remove loose undercoat, followed by a tidy on the face, paws, and sanitary area. I'll do Teddy Bear or Boo cuts, but I don't shave Pomeranians short — post-clip alopecia is a real risk and the coat can come back patchy. Every appointment is one-on-one in my in-home studio in Seagoville, TX. Pom owners drive in from Mesquite, Balch Springs, Kaufman, Forney, and across the southeast DFW metro.

  • Teddy Bear / Boo Cut
  • Lion Cut (creative)
  • Short Summer Trim (with caution — avoid shaving)

Common issues we watch for

  • Post-clip alopecia if shaved too short
  • Dense undercoat trapping heat in summer
  • Loose knee caps (patellar luxation — gentle table handling required)

What a typical Pomeranian session looks like

  1. 1Calm arrival and gentle lift to the table — knees handled with care
  2. 2Pre-brush to loosen undercoat
  3. 3De-shed shampoo bath and conditioner
  4. 4High-velocity dryer blow-out — this is the main event for a Pom
  5. 5Final undercoat rake and slicker comb-through
  6. 6Face, feet, and sanitary tidy — never a short body shave

At-home routine between grooms

  • Brush 2–3 times a week year-round, daily during spring and fall shed seasons
  • Use an undercoat rake sparingly — it's for loose undercoat, not matting
  • Handle the knees gently — Pomeranians are prone to luxating patellas
  • Book a de-shed every 6–8 weeks in heavy shed season; 8–10 weeks otherwise

I won't shave a Pomeranian's coat short unless it's medically necessary — the coat often grows back patchy. A de-shed + tidy is almost always the answer.

Pomeranian grooming — FAQs

I won't shave a Pom short unless it's medically necessary. The double coat actually insulates against heat as well as cold, and shaving can cause post-clip alopecia — the coat grows back patchy, thin, or not at all. A proper de-shed removes the trapped undercoat and cools the dog much more effectively.
