Heavy Shedder De-Shed

Heavy shedders are double-coated breeds — Husky, Golden, Shepherd, Samoyed, Pomeranian, Australian Shepherd — and the single most effective thing you can do for them is a professional de-shed on a high-velocity dryer. At Kay's Groom Room a de-shed session runs 75–150 minutes and removes 60–80% of the loose undercoat in one visit. I pre-brush to loosen, bath with a de-shedding shampoo and conditioner, blow out the undercoat on a high-velocity dryer, rake the remaining loose coat, and tidy the feet and sanitary area. I don't shave double coats — shaving damages the guard-hair cycle and can cause post-clip alopecia. Every appointment is one-on-one in my in-home studio in Seagoville, TX, which is a quieter environment than a loud salon for breeds that often react strongly to high-velocity dryers.

The problem

Double-coated breeds blow their coat twice a year and shed year-round. At-home brushing isn't enough during peak shed season.

Signs your dog may need this

  • Loose fur visible at the roots when you lift the coat
  • Clumps of undercoat coming out in handfuls when you brush
  • Hair on every surface of the house — couches, clothes, car
  • Seasonal blow-out in spring (March–May) or fall (September–November)
  • Breed is one of the double-coated Northern or working breeds
  • Coat feels dense and uneven where undercoat is trapped

Kay's approach

High-velocity dryer blow-outs that remove 60–80% of the loose undercoat in one session. Paired with a deshed shampoo and conditioner.

What to expect

  • Pre-brush to loosen coat
  • De-shedding shampoo and conditioner
  • High-velocity dryer blow-out
  • Final undercoat rake
  • Tidy scissor work on feet and sanitary

Prevention tips

  • Brush 2–3×/week during shedding seasons
  • Book de-sheds every 6–8 weeks in spring and fall
  • Never shave double coats short — it damages the guard hair cycle

What progress looks like

  1. 1

    First de-shed

75–150 minutes of pre-brush, bath, high-velocity dry, rake, and tidy. You'll go home with 60–80% less loose hair in the coat. Expect a noticeable difference in household shedding for 4–6 weeks.

  2. 2

    Maintenance cadence

Every 6–8 weeks off-season. During peak shed (spring and fall), bump to every 4–6 weeks. At-home brushing 2–3 times a week between visits keeps the loose coat moving.

  3. 3

    Peak shed season

Plan an extra de-shed or two during spring and fall blow-outs. Many owners book a 'kickoff' de-shed at the start of each shed season and it dramatically reduces the 6-week chaos.

Heavy Shedder De-Shed — FAQs

No — shaving a double coat damages the natural insulation and can cause post-clip alopecia, where the coat grows back patchy, thin, or not at all. The double coat actually insulates against heat as well as cold. A proper de-shed removes the trapped undercoat and is dramatically more effective at cooling.
