Yorkshire Terrier Grooming

Yorkies have some of the loveliest coats in grooming — fine, silky, almost human-like hair that takes conditioner beautifully. At Kay's Groom Room a Yorkie groom runs 60–100 minutes and prices from $55 to $80. I use a silk-friendly conditioner, straight-dry with low velocity to keep the coat smooth, and finish with a clipper or scissor puppy cut. Because Yorkies are tiny, I always handle them with two hands on the table and watch for dental sensitivity. Every appointment is one-on-one in my in-home studio in Seagoville, TX — calm, quiet, and the right pace for a small, sometimes-nervous breed. Yorkie owners come to us from Seagoville, Mesquite, Balch Springs, Kaufman, Forney, and across southeast DFW.

What a typical Yorkshire Terrier session looks like

  1. 1Gentle arrival — Yorkies can be nervous, so we settle before any tools
  2. 2Pin-brush through and a careful comb for any tangles
  3. 3Warm bath with silk-friendly shampoo and a leave-in conditioner
  4. 4Low-velocity straight-dry to preserve the shine
  5. 5Scissor or clipper puppy cut to your preferred length
  6. 6Face shaping (schnauzer-style or rounded), bow or bandana finish

At-home routine between grooms

  • Brush gently every other day with a pin brush, not a slicker — Yorkie coat is too fine for a slicker
  • Use a leave-in conditioning spray on the tail and ear fringe to keep them silky
  • Wipe under the eyes daily to prevent tear staining
  • Keep body hair out of the food bowl — trim or tie back if you're keeping the coat long

Yorkie coats take conditioner well — I use a leave-in on the tail and ear fringe so they stay silky between visits.

Yorkshire Terrier grooming — FAQs

Yes — bows are a Yorkie classic. I can tie a top-knot bow, a side bow, or add a bandana. Tell me your preference at drop-off. Bows hold best when the face hair has been trimmed clean at the brow.
