Shih Tzu Grooming

Shih Tzus have a beautiful silky coat that grows continuously — which means the choice is really between a short puppy cut that's easy to maintain or a long show coat that requires daily brushing at home. At Kay's Groom Room a Shih Tzu groom runs 75–120 minutes and prices from $65 to $90. Because Shih Tzus are brachycephalic, I pace the groom with breaks between steps and watch for reverse sneezing or heat stress. Every appointment is one-on-one in my in-home studio in Seagoville, TX, which is a much lower-stress environment for a flat-faced breed than a busy salon. I groom Shih Tzus from Seagoville, Mesquite, Balch Springs, Kaufman, Forney, and across southeast Dallas.

Recommended cuts

  • Puppy Cut (short all-over)
  • Teddy Bear
  • Top-Knot + Body Trim
  • Show Coat (long)

Common issues we watch for

  • Eye irritation from long face hair
  • Mats under collar and in armpits
  • Reverse sneezing (brachycephalic — take breaks on table)

What a typical Shih Tzu session looks like

  1. 1Gentle arrival with a few minutes to settle — brachycephalic breeds need breaks from stress
  2. 2Line-brush and mat check, starting with face hair
  3. 3Warm bath with tearless shampoo to protect the eyes
  4. 4Low-velocity straight-dry (not high-velocity on the face)
  5. 5Short puppy cut or requested style + face shaping + top-knot if long
  6. 6Sanitary trim, paw pad shave, nail trim, and ear clean with pauses between

At-home routine between grooms

  • Wipe under the eyes daily with a damp cloth — face hair catches debris fast
  • If keeping long, brush and comb through to the skin every single day
  • Check under the collar and in the armpits weekly for starting mats
  • Book every 4–6 weeks to stay ahead of matting, especially in summer

Shih Tzus do best in a short puppy cut for Texas heat. If you want a top-knot, daily brushing at home is non-negotiable.

Shih Tzu grooming — FAQs

In Texas heat, a short puppy cut is the kinder choice for most Shih Tzus — easier to keep mat-free, cooler in summer, and simpler at home. A long show coat is beautiful but requires daily brushing and combing to the skin. If you want long, I'm happy to maintain it — just know the daily routine is non-negotiable.
