Puppy First Groom
A puppy's first grooming experience shapes every future appointment, which is why I treat the Puppy First Groom as a confidence-building session, not a full groom. At Kay's Groom Room the first puppy visit runs 30–60 minutes and focuses on handling, positive exposure to clipper and dryer sounds, a bath, a light trim, an ear clean, and a nail intro — with plenty of treats and breaks. The goal is a puppy who leaves thinking grooming is fun, not one with a perfect haircut. I recommend the first groom after the second round of vaccinations (usually 12–16 weeks). One-on-one in my in-home studio in Seagoville, TX — quiet, calm, no other dogs in the space to overwhelm a puppy's first exposure.

The problem
A puppy's first grooming experience shapes every future visit. A rushed or scary first groom creates years of anxiety.
Signs your dog may need this
- Puppy is over 12 weeks old and fully on their vaccination schedule
- Starting to develop adult coat and needs regular grooming
- Already showing sensitivity to paw-handling, ear-touching, or dryers
- Matting starting because at-home brushing isn't consistent yet
- Breed requires regular professional grooming (doodle, poodle, curly, long-coated)
Kay's approach
Short, low-pressure sessions focused on handling, sounds, and touch. We won't try for a perfect cut — we'll try for a confident puppy.
What to expect
- Short session (30–60 minutes)
- Introduction to clipper sound, dryer, and brush without pressure
- Bath, light trim, nail intro, ear clean
- Plenty of treats and breaks
- A plan for future appointments
Prevention tips
- Practice touching paws, ears, and tail daily at home from 8 weeks
- Introduce a brush at home before the first appointment
- Keep the first visit short — don't push for a full groom
What progress looks like
- 1
Visit 1 (intro groom, 12–16 weeks)
30–60 minutes of positive exposure — bath, light trim, brush intro, clipper-and-dryer sound exposure without pressure, nail intro, ear clean. Many treats. Goal is a confident puppy, not a perfect cut.
- 2
Visit 2 (6–8 weeks later)
Still shorter than a full adult groom, but we push a little further — slightly more scissor work, a fuller bath-and-dry, longer handling. Treats still flowing.
- 3
Visit 3+ (full cadence)
By the third or fourth visit, most puppies tolerate a full standard groom. From here we move to the breed's normal cadence — every 4–6 weeks for curly coats, longer for smooth and double coats.
